Primary Sources

  • primary source is a piece of information created by participants in a specific event, or witnesses to an event or specific period in history, up to the present. Examples include letters, diaries, official government records, artifacts, newspaper articles, interviews, original photographs, memoirs and autobiographies

  • secondary source uses primary sources to formulate a thesis and develop an argument. These are typically books and articles written about a topic, by a non-participant in an historical event or time period

Searching TIP: Many primary sources can be found within the bibliographies and notes in secondary sources.
