Doing Academic Research

The Research Process

Academic research is a dynamic process in which the researcher discovers, analyzes, and evaluates information from primary and secondary sources. Throughout this process, the researcher is also reading, writing and developing and refining arguments and analysis. The researcher engages with a diversity of information from a wide range of sources.

At the Trinity Library you have access to a diversity of sources to help you in your own research process. There are books, journal articles, images and much more.

You also have search tools and people to assist you in finding this information.

Steps to take if you have questions or need assistance

Places to look for picking a traveler

The Library has two books which have information that might help you select a traveler.

They are both available online as electronic books.

Here are the title links. The link will take you into OneSearch where you will want to click on the link within the "View Online" box on the page.

The Routledge Companion to Travel WritingSee the chapters by Johanna Holmberg on "The Middle East" and Nabil Matar on "Arabic Travel Writing to 1916."

Travellers to the Middle East from Burckhardt to Thesiger : an anthology. In this book there are several pages which give a range of travelogues in English.

Finding books from the Trinity Library and beyond

For your travelers, you may find many, if not all of their travel writings in either print or eBook form using OneSearch.

The best way to discover these writings is to do a search with traveler's name (author) as your main search keywords. You can also combine the author's name with a title. Be aware though that some works do not have titles or titles might be different.

Some books have also been digitized and are freely available online through websites like Google Books and the Internet Archive. The same search strategies apply: search by author and/or title
