How do I know it's an empirical study?

When reviewing a journal article, look for the following key components which identify it as an empirical study:

Abstract - a comprehensive summary of the research
Introduction - a presentation of the research problem and related research
Method - a description of the data collection methods
Results - a summary of the findings/outcomes of the research
Discussion - evaluation and interpretation of the research results
References - a listing of books, articles, etc. cited in the research.
