“Transforming Spirit Bodies” is an edited volume that focuses on the bodies and embodiments of spirits, their (im-)materialities, and their bodily transformations. The anthropological, sociological and archaeological contributions draw attention to the embodied experiences of asymmetrical dependencies among humans and spirits and how experiences of (inter-)dependence are negotiated in their interactions. Suggesting that more-than-human entities significantly contribute to agency in social interactions and power negotiations, the volume further highlights the ambivalent yet undeniable relationship between spirits and materiality. During the processes of materialization and dematerialization, in which spirit bodies transform and are transformed, more-than-human entities may share substances and agency with humans. Not only having material but also social dimensions, these dynamics are influenced by relations of power and dependency. Following posthumanist approaches, this volume therefore challenges the anthropocentric views that continue to dominate scholarly analysis of power relations, dependency, and coercion.

The De Gruyter Handbook of Digital Criminology examines how digital devices spread and cut across all fields of crime and control. Providing a glossary of key theoretical, methodological and criminological concepts, the book defines and further establishes a vibrant and rapidly developing field. Das globale Klima und die aktuelle Klimaveränderung sind in der heutigen Gesellschaft ein omnipräsentes mediales Phänomen, das jedoch, wenn es in der longue durée betrachtet wird, vor allem an konkreten historischen Ereignissen festgemacht wird. Dazu zählen extreme Winter, Hagel und Dürren zu Missernten, die in Hunger, Seuchen, Krieg und Revolutionen resultieren und sich in der Historiographie niederschlagen. Der vorliegende Sammelband widmet sich hingegen der Frage, welche ideengeschichtlichen und kulturellen Konsequenzen langanhaltende Klimaveränderungen auf Literatur, Kultur und Wissenschaft haben, indem das Extremereignis ‚Kältewinter‘ aus interdisziplinärer Perspektive untersucht wird. Dabei stellen die Beitragenden folgende Fragen:

Wie gestaltete sich der Austausch von meteorologischem Wissen im Untersuchungszeitraum? Welche Medien wurden dafür verwendet? Ist mit dem Zeitalter der europäischen Aufklärung ein Wandel im Denken über die Ereignisse der Kältewinter zu konstatieren? Wie gestaltet sich die Visualisierung der Erkenntnisse über die außergewöhnlichen Wetterlagen? Und nicht zuletzt: Welche politischen und gesellschaftlichen Auswirkungen sind in der Folge zu beobachten?

Der Band versammelt in historischer Tiefe natur-, literatur-, musik- und kunstwissenschaftliche Erkenntnisse über die Spuren von Kältewintern im 18. Jahrhundert.

Verschwörungstheorien erleben besonders seit Beginn der COVID-19-Pandemie im Jahr 2020 einen starken Aufschwung. Insbesondere in sozialen Medien stoßen sie auf algorithmisch verstärkte Infrastrukturen, die ihre Verbreitung aufgrund des globalen Distributionspotenzials und des fehlenden journalistischen Gatekeepings begünstigen. Ausgangspunkt der Untersuchung ist, dass Verschwörungstheorien zwar zunehmend im Videoformat kommuniziert werden, wir aber wenig darüber wissen, wie diese Videos multimodal konstruiert sind. Die Studie liefert daher einen empirischen Überblick über verschwörungstheoretische Videoformate, ihre thematische und inhaltliche Zusammensetzung sowie multimodale Argumentationsmuster. Darüber hinaus trägt sie mit der Typologie von Videoformaten und Themenmustern theoretisch zur Medien- und Kommunikationswissenschaft bei. Methodologisch schlägt die Studie einen Analyserahmen zur integrativen Betrachtung von Sprache und Bild vor, der Ansätze verschiedener Disziplinen kombiniert. Dieser Rahmen ist auch für zukünftige Studien zu Verschwörungstheorien und weitere Themen der (politischen) Kommunikation im Videoformat anwendbar.

The lives of migrant Muslim women in divided, post-conflict Northern Ireland, both before and after the pandemic, are full of diverse stories and experiences of belonging. This book explores how women strive to belong and create a home despite pervasive hatred, sexism and racism. Under these circumstances, women employ various strategies to connect with people and places around them. Using personal stories, this book considers the relationships migrant Muslim women develop, the places they spend time and the activities they engage with. These stories are used to demonstrate the interconnectedness of gender, visibility, movement and placemaking as analytical concepts.

Über das Ausmaß, die Messung und die Verteilung von Armut wird vielfach diskutiert. Dabei bleibt die Frage nach ihrer diskursiven Entstehung häufig außen vor: Armut ist immer auch als geschichtlich und kulturell situiertes Phänomen zu verstehen. So wird die Bedürftigkeit von Menschen historisch ebenso unterschiedlich interpretiert wie die menschliche Fähigkeit, die eigene Existenz selbstständig zu sichern. Vor diesem Hintergrund gehen die Beiträger*innen den gegenwärtigen Armutsdiskursen im deutschsprachigen Raum in Medien, Politik und Sozialer Arbeit bzw. Sozialpädagogik nach und geben einen Überblick über deren Auswirkungen auf armutserfahrende Menschen.
