Evaluating Websites

Assess the reliability and authority of any online content and Websites.  Look for reputable authors, such as libraries, museums, historical or research organizations, educational institutions.  Look for primary source material which may have been digitized by these organizations.

Ask these questions:

  • Is the form of the content. appropriate for supporting an argument in a college-level research paper?
  • what person or institution takes responsibility for the content, or is this difficult to determine?
  • what is the authority of this person or instituion?  What are credentials or mission of the organization?
  • what bias can you determine in the content?  do you think the content is accurate?
  • is the website up to date? when was it last updated?

Judge whether the content is relevant, reliable & appropriate for your purposes.

Reminder:  Always remember to cite your sources.  Our online library guide, CiteSource, lets you select a writing/citation style, such as Chicago or MLA, and provides examples of in-text citations and bibliography entries.  For more complex citations, you can also refer to the complete print versions held in the Reference book area, on a shelf just behind the slatted-wood wall.

Also don't forget to cite the source of any images you use in papers or presentations, just as you would cite other resources.
