Data Cleaning

OpenRefine (previously Google Refine) is a tool for working with messy data: cleaning it; transforming it from one format into another; and extending it with web services and external data.


Trifacta is the only open and interactive data engineering cloud platform to collaboratively profile, prepare, and pipeline data for analytics and machine learning.

Statistics & Analysis

R is a free software environment for statistical computing and graphics. It compiles and runs on a wide variety of UNIX platforms, Windows and MacOS. R is available on all public computer on campus and can be accessed via Trinity's Window's Virtual Desktop, or can be downloaded onto your personal computer.


Python is a general-purpose and versatile programming language. It’s a great first language because it’s concise and easy to read.


MatLab is a programming and numeric computing platform developed by MathWorks. It is used to analyze data, develop algorithms, and create models. MatLab is installed on all campus computer lab computers for class use only. Faculty interested in using MatLab for research purposes must purchase a separate license.


SPSS is software for editing and analyzing data. It is owned by IBM and officially named IBM SPSS Statistics. SPSS is available on all public computers in campus computer labs and can be installed on faculty computers, as requested.

STATA is a statistical software package for manipulating and visualizing data. STATA is available on all public campus computers in computer labs for class use only. Faculty interested in using STATA for research purposes much purchase a separate license.

Qualitative & Text Analysis

ATLAS.ti is an AI-assisted qualitative data analysis software. The software is installed on all public computers on campus and can be accessed via Trinity's Window's Virtual Desktop. You must create a free ATLAS.ti account using your Trinity College email address in order to access and use the software.

Voyant is a web-based text reading and analysis environment. It facilitates reading and interpretive practices for digital humanities students and scholars as well as for the general public.

Geographical Analysis

ArcGIS Pro is a geographic information system (GIS) used for maintaining and analyzing spatial and geographic data via mapping and other visualizations. ArcGIS is available on all public computers in campus computer labs and can be installed on faculty computers, as requested.
