Understanding Newspapers

News

A factual article, providing pertinent information (who/what/when/where/why/how) written to inform readers about current events

Example

Analysis

A more in-depth news article that attempts to explain the news by providing additional background information or context

Example

Feature

Typically longer articles that take a more creative or exploratory approach to a topic.  They are usually human-interest stories.

Example

Editorial

An unsigned opinion piece that represents the views of the news organization’s editorial staff, and usually is a commentary on the news.

Example

Op-Ed

Named because they often appear on the page opposite the editorials in a physical paper, these are opinion pieces written by named authors either guest columnists or staff writers not associated with the newspaper's editorial board.

Letters to the Editor

Opinion pieces written by readers as a reaction or commentary upon the content of the newspaper

Example

Review

Opinion pieces written as evaluations or critiques of some cultural artifact (i.e. album, book, movie, performance, product, etc.)
