Research for Writing & Editing Wikipedia

Short Description:

This two-part session was designed for students in a 300-level sociology course centered on global gender inequalities. The main assignment for the course required students to either create or edit Wikipedia articles related to the themes of the course. For session one, students needed help in understanding and locating peer-reviewed articles to satisfy Wikipedia's criteria around reliable sources. Session two focused on providing students with strategies for researching a living person (i.e., scholars in the field) and thinking through their own citational practices. You will find detailed notes in the notes section of the slides.

Creating & Remixing OER (Session I)

Short Description:

Joelle and I designed and delivered a two-part workshop series on creating and remixing OER for two sections of a 100-level writing and rhetoric course. As a class, students were tasked with creating an open writing and rhetoric textbook that included remixing in existing OER related to college writing.

Session one introduced students to the what and the why of OER, provided examples of remixed works and student created OER, included guided searches in different OER repositories and referatories, and a checklist for evaluating the OER they found through searching. Joelle and I created a personal tracking worksheet for students to keep track of the OER they found while searching as well as a shared Google spreadsheet for all students to add their OER. The shared spreadsheet served as a kind of class repository for everyone to use and "borrow" material from. This was especially important given the dearth of OER centered on writing in specific disciplines as well as the need to ensure the open materials students opted to remix contained compatible Creative Commons licenses. Each section of RHET 103 had their own shared Google spreadsheet. Joelle and I also created a Padlet for each section of the class to house the various resources we shared over the course of the two sessions.

Creating & Remixing OER (Session II)

Short Description:

Joelle and I designed and delivered a two-part workshop series on creating and remixing OER for two sections of a 100-level writing and rhetoric course. As a class, students were tasked with creating an open writing and rhetoric textbook that included remixing in existing OER related to college writing.

Session two introduced students to the basics of copyright, the free culture movement and the birth of Creative Commons, the various types of open licenses, special considerations when combining open licenses, and citing CC-licensed works. Again, we used the Padlet board to house resources shared during the class. You will find detailed notes in the notes section of my slides.
