Short Description:
This session was designed for a first-year seminar with 15 students. The instructor requested an activity that provides an orientation to the library but allows students to physically move through the space and understand the different ways in which they might use the library. The goal is for students to see the “library as place” (i.e., physical, social, and intellectual space) rather than simply as a warehouse for dusty old books.

The course instructor requested a short (30-minute) session for me to introduce myself to the students and a longer session later in the semester to offer research support for a food geographies assignment. This session was delivered over Zoom and so I built in even more interactivity to keep the students engaged (remember teaching to black screens?)

The instructor requested a 30- to 45-minute session where I introduced myself to the students. I used the session to briefly introduce the different research supports I provide and some key library resources for the discipline since there would not be a follow-up research session.

I created this discussion board post when we transitioned from in-person to mostly online instruction at the college as a result of the pandemic; a transition that heightened the importance of embedded librarianship. I requested the instructor add me to her Moodle course so I could create this post. I turned off the option for responses since the goal was for students to know who I am, how might help them, and how to schedule a research consultation.

Attached you will find a joint email that Dave and I sent to our shared departments. We both thought it was important for faculty to receive a periodic joint email from their assigned research librarian and instructional technologist, particularly since they were not always sure about what fell under my purview vs Dave's.
