Designing a Keywords Search Strategy

Short Description:

This session was for the international studies senior seminar. For their final assignment, students were expected to write a 20-25 page research paper. The professor requested a session that included strategies for pre-research and finding scholarly articles. I followed this session up with a second session focused on writing literature reviews. Researching Countries & Incorporating Grey Literature

Short Description:

This session was designed for students in a 300-level human rights course that explored the intersection of social justice and the arts. Over the course of the semester students would be presenting case studies focused either on specific countries in Latin America, artists, NGOs, or anything related to justice. They also had a final research paper or project that explored the question of justice and the arts. The library session focused on preparing students to do country and interdisciplinary and strategies for incorporating grey literature. Researching & Writing Policy Briefs

Short Description:

This lesson plan was developed for students in a 200-level public policy course. Students were writing two policy briefs: a brief centered on the U.S. and a second that was international in scope. The instructor requested a session designed to introduce students to the research process for health policy briefs and to finding peer-reviewed scholarly articles. Research Strategies for Public Scholarship (The Case of Op Eds)

Short Description:

This session was designed for students in a 300-level Public Policy internship seminar where students were required to write an op ed for the CT Mirror.  By the end of the session, students were expected to be able to identify and locate the types of information sources needed for public scholarship and to critically assess the credibility of web resources by using the lateral reading techniques of fact checkers. Understanding & Using Census Data

Short Description:

This session was designed for students in the urban studies first year seminar. For their final assignment, students were required to use Social Explorer to create maps that captured the food geographies of a U.S. city of their choosing. The professor requested a session that introduced students to understanding and using Census data and the process for creating food geography maps in Social Explorer. Below you will find a short slideshow presentation that covers the differences between the Decennial Census and the American Community Survey (ACS), ACS estimates, and Census geographies as well as a research guide that covers the same topics along with where to find Census data. You will find detailed notes in the notes section of my slides.
