Literature Reviews (Introductory Level)

Short Description:

This session was designed for a 300-level Public Policy and Law class where students were required to write a literature review on a topic related to restorative justice. Students were limited to books and scholarly peer-reviewed articles. They needed help in understanding what a literature review is and how to go about writing one. The lesson plan included a reading of Jeffrey Knopf's article "Doing a Literature Review" and an introduction to using a synthesis matrix for writing literature reviews. I adapted the synthesis matrix from the matrix created by North Carolina State University Writing and Speaking Tutorial Service. I have delivered a version of this session for 200-level classes as well. You will find detailed notes in the notes section of my slides.

Writing Literature Reviews Using a Synthesis Matrix (Upper Level)

Short Description:

This session was created for students in a political science thesis colloquium who were in the process of writing literature reviews for various chapters of their theses. It was preceded by a workshop on using Zotero to manage and organize sources. This is a hands-on workshop that requires students to have read a substantial amount of the relevant academic literature around their topics and is thus best suited for senior seminars and thesis colloquiums. Students were required to read and come prepared to discuss Jeffrey Knopf’s article on writing literature reviews and to have already made a copy of the synthesis matrix we shared ahead of the session. We ended with a third session on finding, evaluating, and writing with grey literature. The synthesis matrix was adapted from the matrix created by North Carolina State University Writing and Speaking Tutorial Service. You will find detailed notes in the notes section of my slides.
